OUREAD LEEDS

OUREAD: Reclaiming North Leeds, One Page at a Time

Welcome to OUREAD, North Leeds’ unapologetically local, free monthly magazine – posted through your door, available online, and now with an e-subscription version for those who want to stay a step ahead on exclusive local deals and offers. But OUREAD is more than just a publication. It’s a movement – a mission to reconnect, rebuild, and reignite the community spirit that once defined our streets, our people, and our future.

Born From a Need, Not a Trend

Founded and fiercely championed by editor Charlie, OUREAD isn’t afraid to ask the hard questions. What happened to our communities? Why are the cornerstones of our neighbourhoods – the small businesses, youth clubs, and sense of solidarity – gone? Charlie calls it “The Matrix” – a creeping force of control, profit and policy that’s bled out the local heart of North Leeds and towns just like it across the UK.

He sees the impacts daily: ex-service men and women sleeping rough with no help for their PTSD, youths forming gangs in the absence of clubs and mentors, parents taxed to the bone while inflation strangles their ability to provide. Meanwhile, corporate giants exploit legal loopholes and foreign developers prioritise housing for newcomers over local residents. It’s no wonder that for many, staying on benefits seems more stable than employment. The system feels rigged – and OUREAD is here to fight back.

A Magazine With a Mission

OUREAD is built on three powerful pillars:

  1. Community Voice – We offer a platform for locals to speak freely, away from mainstream media bias. Here, freedom of speech lives and breathes.
  2. SME Power – Backed by a growing alliance of local small and family-run businesses, OUREAD helps form franchise-style ownership opportunities that give working people a chance to own, lead and inspire.
  3. Real Local Change – We aim to re-engage people with their neighbourhoods – encouraging involvement, responsibility, and pride in our streets.

Charlie is clear: “We’ve been branded by systems that don’t serve us. It’s time we built our own brand – one that protects our values, our people, and our independence.”

No More Watching From the Sidelines

OUREAD is not just reporting the issues – it’s mobilising the community to be the solution. Whether you’re a tradesperson undercut by unregulated practices, a young person seeking purpose, or a family business trying to survive, OUREAD is your ally. Our publication isn’t governed by advertisers or distant shareholders – it’s governed by you, the people of North Leeds.

We’ve already begun:

  • Partnering with local SMEs to offer work, training, and shared ownership models
  • Featuring honest, uncensored stories from residents who have lived the changes
  • Pushing for local initiatives to bring back youth centres, mental health support, and real, fair job creation

OUREAD abbreviated, from the developing OUR GROUP UK Yes looking at it, one would think, a brand? A group? Very corporate notion!! Indeed yes, the breakdown of this is as so…. OUR gives indication to something here belonging to you and I. GROUP, this gives reference to a collection of companies of all different industries collectively creating a group and ultimately yes a BRAND. This is rather simple, for as much as Im a fond lover for the SME independent, enterprise , Im not naive enough to think that, today’s markets, in whatever sector, sadly, on a dark suited, matrix level, it’s been written, it’s a brand it get branded world, full of familiarity and generic high streets. I’m also one whom looks for the best in each situation, I have taken the best innovation and winning points that brands offer, amalgamated it with the benefits, et...
